Join us for the presentation by Michael Smith, the author of the book Designing Detroit - Wirt Rowland and the Rise of Modern American Architecture. Detroit's Guardian Building is widely recognized as the world's finest Art Deco skyscraper, and serves as one example of the innovative building designs developed in Detroit during the first half of the last century. Guardian's designer, Detroit architect Wirt Rowland, devised a wholly new or "modern" appearance for buildings that was distinctly American, and not reliant on decorative elements copied from architecture of the past.
